Sunny Hiouchi
Your California NorthCoast Vacation Gateway to the Smith River National Recreation Area
Hiouchi makes visiting the California North Coast on your vacation complete. Just minutes outside Crescent City it is nestled between the coastal mountain ranges that make up the Redwood National and California State Parks.
It is our local favorite for after work and for summertime camping, fishing, sunbathing, swimming, rafting, and more.
The public and private campgrounds and the motel are full to overflowing during the warm summer and fall months.
Hiouchi is easily accessed by driving either northeast on Highway 101 to the Highway 199 turn off toward Grants Pass, Oregon. Or coming south from Smith River, turn east at the intersection of Highway 101 at Highway 197E just before the Dr. Fine Bridge.
Fast becoming one of the most sought after residential areas of our county, Hiouchi boasts Redwood, Douglas Fir and Spruce forests with plenty of Big leaf Maple, wild Rhododendrons and a local summer time favorite; Himalayan Blackberries and Huckleberries-Great Pies! Yum!
You'll have to try some out at the Cafe located on your route east up Hwy 199.
While you're in the neighborhood, stop across the street at the Hiouchi Hamlet; market and gas station, or stay at the Motel right next door.
The forks of the Smith River merge just north of this tiny community at the Slant Bridge which is at the end of the Stout Grove backwoods drive we told you about on our "Crescent City" page.
Right under the bridge is one of the favorite sunbathing and swimming spots. The most popular swimming areas are near the bridge and within the Jedediah Smith Redwood National and State Park. Camping and fishing as well as sunbathing, rafting and kayaking are popular pastimes here.
Walker road is found along your route from Crescent City up through the Redwood National Park along Highway 199E before you get to the Hiouchi bridge on the west side of Hwy 199.
If you follow this gravel road to the end you will find a parking spot and several places to hike and swim along the south side of the Smith River or take pictures on or infront of ancient redwood logs and stumps.
