Whale watching is a popular winter adventure for locals and visitors alike. For some reason it seems the winter storms bring out the playfulness of these magnificent creatures.
There is lodging alone the coast where you can pear through your binoculars for inside the comfort and warmth of your room. Or for the more adventurous there are charter boats you can arrange to get "up close and personal" from the deck.
Unfortunetly when the weather sometimes isn't fit for man nor beast, well, that's when these giants seem to decide to show themselves. Maybe they are smarter than we think and are just trying to disguise themseleves in the breaking waves

Fortunately along most of the northcoast if you can get right onto the beach or one of the bluffs you won't have much of a problem spotting whales.
Sightings can start as early as November along the coast in Del Norte County near
Crescent City
and run clear through the end of February or early March depending on the weather and the year.
Breaching Whale
Although it seems to be a rare occurrence, some people are fortunate enough to spot one of these giant ocean mammals breaching the waters just off the California northcoast.
However, with the charter services available in most port towns, offshore sightings are greatly increased.
Wherever you come across one of these signposts erected by the state and/or national parks, even some chambers of commerces you can be assured that whale watching is not far away.

Sometimes it takes a miute or so to figure out whether you are actually looking at a whale spot or the waves crashing over an off shore rock but after a few sightings you're sure to catch these magnificent creatures right away when they are in the area.
